Allahabad, August 16, 2010. Students should use their learning for social purpose, said Professor Jean Dreze in his inaugural address of the MBA Rural Development programme at the G B Pant Social Science Institute. He warned that the social sciences is becoming more like a fashion show, an end in itself. Researchers seem to work more with a perspective of the government or of other sponsorers. And such research has become a means of indoctrination rather than enlightenment. Consequently social science is becoming bereft of social realities and researchers ignorant of the real world.
The eminent Professor challenged the neo classical economic theory taught in the Universities. Questions such as why people make a choice that they do, the manner in which firms, while maximising their profits, pass on the costs such as those of corruption on the society are not raised.
In the context of MNREGA, the Professor said that the poor are constantly battling with a system hostile to them. The pro-poor laws are implemented by an anti poor system. In these circumstances it is the duty of the students to use their learning about the society for social action. He said that the MBA RD Course is well poised to give this lead.
While getting into action, he cautioned that the students and researchers should not miss out on objectivity in their work and let their convictions not influence their objectivity. To address this issue The Institute could engage in collective research leading to social action.
The Director of the Institute, Professor Pradeep Bhargava thanked the speaker and said that the Course shall aspire to fulfil many of the issues raised by him.
